In this day and age images play an important role in making an interactive website or an e-commerce portal. Neuroscientists at MIT have found that human brain can identify images in as little as 13 milliseconds. This means that images are much easier to process than text.

“The greater the number of potential choices, the longer it will take to make a decision”, said British psychologists William Edmund Hick and Ray Hyman. It’s not about the number of images you use, it about choosing them correctly and aligning to the thoughts & emotions behind the concept. This would help optimize the overall experience of a user in the website.

Consider these factors while using images:

1. The image should tell a story or should explain what does the product stand for.

The image tell its a product that connects your phone and cards

2. Use images that tells the user, what you sell. No confusion, no distraction. Keep it simple.

The image clearly shows visiting card printing as their service

3. If you are using faces, make sure they are pointed towards the message you want to promote. It has been observed that if a baby is looking at something, user tends to look at that target rather than when the baby is looking at the user.

How where the kid is looking can change user focus

4. Image should not project a lot of information but should focus on what is important. It is better to use an image that focus on single subject.

Using images of single object is always better than using images with multiple object

5. Use photos of people with baby or a family when you want to gain empathy and trust.

6. Use images of people’s faces to draw attention. Position products or call to action close to faces to guarantee that they are not neglected.

People tends to look at people face

Using images correctly can help us optimize the experience of our website. We can always find out more by doing user testing.
